June 17, Boulder, CO, 16.67 Miles and 3500 vertical feet!
« on: June 17, 2014, 10:32:18 PM »
This one was hard, but so good. I decided I'd run one third of the race-day mileage, which is 16.67 miles. To get the mileage, I just started running on some trails in the mountains and didn't stop until I hit 16.67. In the process, I ran (stumbled?) to the summit of Green Mountain, which was pretty spectacular.

Running in the mountains was divine, but as soon as I got back down to Boulder it was very hot, and for parts of the run I had no real shade. So that wasn't very pleasant; I need to make sure to take gatorade or Gu or something on these runs to make sure my electrolytes stay in balance. I didn't have any serious dehydration symptoms, but it didn't feel very good nonetheless.

Oh, and this run was considerably steeper than the actual race will be. It was exactly 1/3 the distance, but closer to half the total elevation gain. So that was very encouraging!

Thanks for the help on the running, MMC! This is starting to get good. :)

Here's a photo I snapped looking west-northwest from the summit of Green Mountain (you can just make out Long's Peak, our local 14,000-ft mountain, over on the right):
